The leaves are on the ground and you are wondering how your trees will fare when the next Vancouver storm comes along? Or perhaps it is a matter of putting some protection in place on your property ahead of winter.
You do not have to put that off; there is help at hand. We are Reyes Tree Service, a licensed tree care firm for Vancouver, WA and the rest of Clark County. Give us a ring at (360) 837-7017. Under the direction of Pedro Reyes and with a team that has seen its share of field work, we are well acquainted with what the changing seasons demand of a Clark County tree.
In the Pacific Northwest one cannot overstate the importance of fall tree care. The effort put in now will be repaid in the months of wind and rain to come. We put forward these tips for local homeowners as a rule.
The Case for Fall Tree Work
With the cooler weather and more rain, trees are putting their energy into the roots, so autumn is an opportune moment for an inspection or some pruning. Yet it is also when you have to be wary of unstable trees and limbs gone bad.
A tree may have been in good order all summer but once the wind picks up and the ground gives way, it can let go of a branch or come down altogether. That is why a measure of attention is warranted. In Clark County the rain and gales are to be expected from here on out.
What to Put on Your To Do List
We would advise Clark County residents to see to the following before winter:
- Take stock of any deadwood and get rid of branches hanging about that a storm could bring down
- Prune and trim to relieve the strain on an overextended limb and put some shape to the tree
- Get rid of suckers and the like at the trunk
- See if there is any root instability or a tree with a lean to it
- Make sure there is enough room between power lines, the driveway or roof and the tree
- For a large tree with a weak union in the branches, cabling or bracing may be in order
- Old stumps should be ground up to forestall decay and the pests that come with it
One can do some of this on one’s own. But when ladders or large limbs are involved, or the tree is close to a structure, leave it to a licensed crew.
Getting Ready for Storms
Most of the emergency calls we get in this part of the country are the result of the fall and winter storms. Trouble is usually caused by a tree with a dead limb or one that is not growing straight.
An inspection by a pro will turn up cracks, cavities or fungus that are not readily apparent from the ground. It is much less expensive and safer to take out a limb you deem hazardous than to clean up after it has taken out your car or home. All too often we find homeowners have let things go until they have fallen. A little prevention in the fall is worth avoiding a larger problem down the road.
If You Need an Emergency Call
Storms will be storms no matter how well prepared. Should a tree fall in your yard or put your driveway out of commission, or if it is left leaning after a blow, it is not something to tackle by yourself.
Reyes Tree Service is on call 24/7 for such emergencies, even outside our normal hours. If it is the weekend or the middle of the night, (360) 837-7017 will connect you with us.
